The Cámara de Comercio building, at Avda. Diagonal, 452-54, was formerly called the Edificio Banco Industrial del Sur. The city's chamber of commerce moved into it during the mid-1970s, and there were several phases of renovation that lasted into the early 1980s. Architect Fernando Bendala made use of marble, glass and chrome in his design, especially in the entrance hall, the bank rooms beyond it and the fantastically beautiful curving staircase. If you're visiting the Barcelona Centre of Design BCD on the fifth floor, forget the elevator - and soak in the staircase instead!
The Barcelona Centre of Design BCD began as a foundation in 1973 with the aim of promoting design. It supports companies, encourages international exchanges, and provides information on design as well as promoting it. International and national exhibitions play an important role here. The foundation awards a design prize in cooperation with MINER. Further tasks of the foundation include the organization of lectures, seminars, consulting, competitions and also the publication of a monthly bulletin. The BCD has a well-stocked library on the themes of design and architecture, and also provides regular information about its current activities.
